Sherwood Forest is quite possibly what Nottinghamshire is most well-known for, and for good reason. This ancient forest, once to home to the famous Robin Hood and his Merry Men, is now open to be explored by the public. Whether you want to walk the forest, cycle it, play golf in it or even go horse riding through it you can do whatever you wish. A great place to visit in good weather, Sherwood Forest is a great day out. Nottinghamshire also has an impressive array of man-made attractions too. Buildings such as Wollaton Hall, Nottingham Castle, Thoresby Hall and Hardwick Hall are magnificent constructions with a rich heritage, and all open to the public. With impressive stately grounds too these buildings rank among some of the finest in Britain.  Plenty of Natioanl Trust properties can also be found in Nottinghamshire including Belton House, Clumber Park and Southwell Workhouse.   The City of Caves network in the heart of Nottingham is a very unique attraction which is well worth a visit. Comprising of a series of caves carved out of sandstone, the City of Caves has been used at various times as a tannery, public house cellar and air raid shelter. With audio tours and the possibility to buy a joint ticket which also includes entry into the Galleries of Justice Museum, the caves are a great way to do something interesting and different right in the city centre.

Nottinghamshire has something for everyone and for those having a short break without children, booking outside of term time will ensure you get even better rates for staying at your holiday cottage or B&B.
