Dorchester Holiday Accommodation

A visit to the Dorchester area will place you in the very heart of English history and literature, but with so much on offer you'll need more than a day. Farm Stay can help you find the perfect holiday accommodation to suit your budget and your taste, whether it be a self catering cottage with modern facilities or a traditional B&B on a working farm.

Dorchester is the county town of Dorset: an historic, pretty market town with many independent shops. Here you can find the Neolithic monument, 'Maunbury Rings,' and the famous Maiden Castle Celtic hill fort. Once also a Roman town, Dorchester still boasts a Roman villa and a part of the old Roman wall. Judge Jeffries held the infamous trials following Monmouth's rebellion at the end of 17thC here and you can now have lunch in the very restaurant where those trials took place! Here also the Tolpuddle Martyrs were tried and sentenced - you can visit the courts and see the trial re-enacted or visit the Tolpuddle Martyrs' museum a few miles east of Dorchester.

But perhaps Dorchester is most famous for being the home and inspiration of the novelist Thomas Hardy. You can visit Hardy's birthplace, a quaint cottage in an idyllic woodland setting in Lower Bockhampton just outside of Dorchester, and also his later home 'Max Gate', both now National Trust properties.
