Finding myself in North Devon, the end of my long drive, was a long drive! The long drive in question was that of Huxtable Farm, a five star Bed and Breakfast and the home of Jackie and Antony Payne based close to West Buckland, on the way to Barnstable and the North Devon beaches.

Tourism affects Everyone, Everywhere, Every day. This is the message that all Farm Stay members will be reminding voters to think about, especially when meeting one of the anticipated 250 new MP's that will coming to Westminster after the election. Consider the facts: -

I was delighted that Alistair Sawday was given the opportunity in the Daily Telegraph to respond to Tim Lott's article Wish You Weren't Here deriding the inadequecies of the Great British B&B. Clearly for Tim, it took less time and imagination to write the "let's tell everyone how rubbish we were back in the 70's and 80's" than spend serious time learning about the quality food, upgraded and refurbished rooms and outstanding experience you find at Farm Stay, Sawdays and many other B&B and self-catering organisations.

I have broken all of the rules of blogging - I have been away and it has been 3 months since my last entry. But what an autumn - more great stays, more Great British (England, Wales and Scotland) breakfasts, and many beautiful views, culminating with the Farm Stay AGM and Tourism Conference at the Forest Pines Hotel on the banks of the Humber.

Last week a few of us had a very enjoyable trip to North Lincolnshire for our annual Farm Stay AGM and Conference, including familiarisation trips to sea straw bale cottages in Yorkshire, and my highlight was seeing the very new baby grey seals at Donna Brook Nature Reserve - so close we could almost touch them.

So sit back, take a long deep breath of country air, admire the view, and let others do the donkey work!

It has been a journey, however welcome to the new Farm Stay UK website - the first thing you will have noticed is that we are moving from www.farmstayuk.co.uk to www.farmstay.co.uk I think that it is a cleaner web address to use and the .co.uk reminds visitors that it is a UK based website. We are very much "work in progress" and over the next few months we will work to introduce our on-line availability and on-line booking systems. It is also my intention to make this the most cost effective system in the market for our Farm Stay members and this way, we will attract back to us many of the other farmers in the UK "going it alone".

Looking after the interests of our 750 B&B, 550 self-caterings, campsites, caravan sites, bunk barns and hostels is not just about publicity, marketing, websites and advertising. A serious part of my role is to hold government to task over proposed legislation and rule changes. last week I attended a meeting in London at the British Hospitality Association Offices (BHA) along with colleagues from the Tourism Alliance, CLA, Historic Houses Association and others to discuss the Furnished Holiday Letting rule changes (FHL). This was slipped onto page 111 of the Budget, which never made the Chancellor's Speech and didn't even get spotted at DCMS or DEFRA.
