Farm Stay Bed and Breakfast wins North East England Taste Award

Oct 18, 2010

Farm Stay member, Low Urpeth Farm Bed and Breakfast near Durham, has captured the Bronze medal in the prestigious Taste North East Awards for creating an inspirational breakfast which is the pride of the region.

The award recognises the awe-inspiring ‘Cracking Urpeth Breakfast' which showcases the best local produce from the region and is still lovingly prepared and served by the farmer and his wife, Peter and Hilary Johnson.

Low Urpeth Farm strives to deliver a unique countryside experience making visitors part of the rich heritage of a farm which has been in the family for over 190 years, while promoting the region through the dramatic and inspiring rural landscape, its sustainable local produce people and customs.

Low Urpeth Farm's policy is to source local farm-assured, seasonal, organic and/or fair-trade produce for the benefit of our guests. This is done to support the local businesses and bring added value to their experience. This includes meats, eggs, vegetables, bread, jams and fruits from a variety of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham farms, butchers and garden centres.
Andy Woodward, Chief Executive of Farm Stay, congratulated Low Urpeth Farm on its award, declaring: "Farm Stay breakfasts are cooked to order with outstanding fresh local produce and a smile every morning and it is this passion and personal attention which makes Farm Stay breakfasts a winning combination."

A delighted Hilary Johnson, said: "We pride ourselves on offering a superb experience through the quality of our accommodation, friendliness and our award winning breakfast to ensure guests leave with a passionate view of Low Urpeth and the North East.
"Food is our passion and we're very proud of what we have produced here at Low Urpeth based upon a great selection of local tastes. We are constantly trying to put the best of the North East on a plate and have had food taste challenges for our guests to sample, because it's their opinion that matters the most. We also have a comprehensive training programme for our staff to keep our creative juices flowing!

"This is recognition and a reward for the whole Low Urpeth Team as well all the local producers we use from County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne & Wear".
Not content to sit on its laurels, Low Urpeth now has its own brand products - ‘Hilary's Homemade' - which brings together a selection of breads, jams and pastries using recipes handed down through generations.
