Lower Collaton Farm is a traditional old Devonshire farmhouse, dating back to Domesday, nestled in a peaceful secluded valley, with south facing views over rolling countryside. Here James and Rosie Mussen have three charming self catering cottages that are available for holidays.
The largest cottage is The Byre, which sleeps six. The three bedrooms (one double, two twins) are all en suite, and the open plan living area is upstairs to take advantage of the views down the valley. The cows used to be milked in The Byre, and the name boards from their mangers (Curly, Rosina, Francy etc) are on the wall.below the exposed scissor beams. Outside is a small lawn and patio with seating and barbeque. This cottage is available from Easter to the end of September.
The Stables, which sleeps four, has a similar layout, with open plan on the first floor and double and twin bedrooms plus bathroom below. Once again the beams are exposed, giving the cottage lots of character. There is an outside seating area and a further guests area to the rear. Like The Byre it is available from Easter to the end of September.
Tucked into the opposite side of the courtyard is The Old Granary, our delightful cosy cottage for just two. With maple flooring and beamed ceiling, the downstairs bedroom has an adjacent wetroom. Up the winding stairs is the kitchen and living area. Outside is a pretty little garden. It’s available throughout the year, and for short breaks out of season.
Lower Collaton is ideally placed, only six miles from Dartmouth and the same distance from Totnes, Kingsbridge and award winning local beaches such as Blackpool Sands. It is an ideal base for coastal and moorland walking, and for visiting the many local gardens such as Agatha Christie’s Greenway and the D’Oyley Carte’s Collaton Fishacre, (both National Trust). Foodies will enjoy the fish at Mitch Tonks’ famous Sea Horse restaurant or John Burton Race’s New Angel in Dartmouth. There are many more fine eating places to try close by!
Lower Collaton is a small working farm, and apart from the hens and ducks in the yard Rosie and James have a small flock of around 30 pedigree Shetland sheep. Many are particularly tame and friendly, and guests are welcome to be introduced at closer quarters. Lambing is in April, when Rosie and James are often at action stations!
