The area is a real hidden gem, often over looked for the busier Lake District. It is a haven for walkers, with over 200 public footpaths in just 75 square kilometers. Bird and nature lovers will also not be disappointed, with Leighton Moss RSPB bird reserve and Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve on our doorstep.
We first started offering self-catering holiday accommodation in 1976, with Keepers Cottage. In 1988 we converted a barn into what are now The Old Stables Cottages, numbers 1 and 2. More recently, Brackenthwaite Cottage has also become available for holidays. The cottages have proved very popular over the years, with many visitors returning regularly and people coming from all over the world to enjoy this unique area.
Our four holiday cottages form part of an attractive 17th Century complex of limestone buildings, set around a large private courtyard and situated on a 70 acre farm with woodland. We have a pond for observing ornamental waterfowl; nature trails where buzzards, deer and many wild flowers can be seen. Around the farm, rare breed cattle and sheep graze and our free-range poultry and waterfowl roam.
The clean and comfortable cottages have outdoor seating and barbeque areas and there is ample private off-road parking. Sky TV (FreeSat) is now installed in each cottage, as well as a DVD player. For a small additional charge, we allow one well-behaved dog per cottage (except Brackenthwaite Cottage) and visitors may also bring their own horse on holiday, as there are stabling and grazing facilities.
All bed linen and electricity is included, however we do not provide hand or bath towels (though these may be hired). Cots, high chairs and baby baths are available free of charge on request (sorry, we do not provide cot linen). Also included in the price, are little essentials like: washing-up liquid, dish cloths, tea towels, kitchen and toilet rolls.
