Garden Cottage is a brand new extension to our converted Cotswold stone barn. Attractively and tastefully furnished by our Interior Designer daughter it is accessed through wide double French doors and is all on one level. It is designed with a couple in mind. The flat has a small kitchen area with a 2 ring hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster & kettle and there is a small gas barbecue outside on the private patio area. This overlooks our own fields & horses and the village of Hook Norton. Garden Flat has it's own entrance and ample private parking.
The flat has a large, light, airy & comfortable sitting room, again with lovely views, and there is large smart TV & freeview box. There are local maps and guides available for walks & other tourist attractions and an Ordnance Survey map on the wall in the kitchen area. The double bedroom is accessed via some old French shutter doors and has a large wardrobe and drawers. The ensuite bathroom has a shower/bath plus basin and loo.
Sadly although Hook Norton is famous for its Brewery the 2 pubs in the village are not the best locals! They are both fine if you just want a beer, but for food the best & nearest pub is The Gate Hangs High about a mile the other side of Hooky. There is a fabulous pub, The Red Lion, in Long Compton about 4 miles away with excellent food and service and The Norman Knight in Whichford takes a lot of beating – but you would definitely need to book for both! The whole area is popular with cyclists, walkers and horse riders so booking is usually advisable in any of the better locals! There is a tennis club in the village and regular organised walks that visitors are welcome to join! Hook Norton is an eco village, with 3 biodiesel cars, 2 e-bikes and a thriving eco approach to solar heating etc. As well as tours round the Brewery you can visit The Cotswold Distillery just up the road in Cherington and they have regular tours as well as some great gins to buy! Soho Farmhouse is about 4 miles away and the award winning Daylesford Organic Farmshop about 5 miles.
Hook Norton is about the same distance from Stow on the Wold, Chipping Norton, Moreton in Marsh (huge market every Tuesday) and Shipston on Stour – all very attractive local market towns. The more touristy areas of The Slaughters, Bourton on the Water, Chipping Camden & Broadway are a little further with maybe a half hour drive – but through gorgeous countryside – and well worth a visit! Batsford Arboretum is accessed from Bourton on the Hill via their own Garden Centre, and Westonbirt Arboretum is around at hour away through Cirencester. Locally there are many antique outlets – of particular note is Station Mill in Chipping Norton – 2 floors & a café! Stow on the Wold too is famous for antiques – but of the more pricey variety. It also has 2 annual Gypsy Fairs in May & October.
If you travel a little further you will find Woodstock, and the famous Blenheim Palace; Stratford on Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace & the home of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company, or RSC; Oxford with it’s beautiful colleges and Bicester Village – one of the UK’s top tourist attractions! Warwick, Coventry, Rugby, Daventry, Evesham, Worcester, Cirencester, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Tewkesbury & Malvern are all within an hour’s drive!
The National Trust is well represented locally with Chastleton House, Snowshill, Upton House, Hidcote Gardens, Charlecote Park & many others all around an hour’s drive or less from Hook Norton. For cyclists, walkers and riders there are plenty of footpaths, bridleways and mapped cycle routes – all with handily placed pubs en route! The area is well served with 5 local golf courses within 10 minutes & we can advise which one would suit your game! Soho Farmhouse has opened recently about 10 minutes away in the village of Great Tew – you need to be signed in by a member – or be a member!
There are many annual “must sees” near to the cottage – Silverstone Motor Racing track is about 40 minutes away with its many meetings including the British Grand Prix; Cheltenham Race Track is, again, about 40 minutes away and the whole area is always busy during the Festival Week; Blenheim Palace hosts The Countryfile Live show and Blenheim Horse Trials to name but 2 of the many events they put on; Cornbury Park has The Wilderness Festival every year – about 20 minutes away & Jamie Oliver’s The Big Feastival is in Kingham just the other side of Chipping Norton. There’s horse racing at Stratford, eventing at Aston le Walls & Blenheim, the hugely popular Prescott Hill Climb just this side of Tewkesbury, Hook Norton’s own Beer Festival, a Canal Festival in Stratford on Avon & many other markets, sporting events and festivals large and small. The Warwickshire& Heythrop Hunts are locally based and we occasionally see The Farmer’s Bloodhounds, who chase “the clean boot” – i.e. a runner!
The owners have lived at the house for nearly 20 years and know the area well. We have 2 small dogs, Ted & Nellie and a beautiful but shy white cat called Florence! Regrettably we don’t accept guests dogs.
