If you’re looking for a great day out for all the family, a visit to The Big Sheep in Bideford is a must! This famous attraction is a good mix of entertainment with nature, and has something to entertain any age group. Kids can burn off excess energy and play safely on a great selection of slides and imaginative soft play climbing areas, tumble towers, mazes & obstacles. You can also enjoy many outdoor activities, taking a ride on farm safari rides, a lakeside train or sail around the lake in giant swan pedalo boats. And the highlight of the visit will be the Sheep Race - a hysterical sporting event complete with sheep and jockeys!
The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth is a very popular place to take the children - and what's more it is free to get in! It provides refuge for over 500 donkeys and you are free to spend as much time as you wish meeting the donkeys and taking strolls along its unique field walks. There is also a maze, video room, nature centre, and family picnic areas.
The South Devon Railway is seven miles of Steam Train fun, where toddlers can hop aboard on special Thomas the Tank Engine days, while train enthusiasts of all ages can admire locomotives and see how steam engines work at the museum (or just partake in the cream teas and riverside walks!). To make a full day out you can also get admission into two further attractions that the train ferries you between. Hop off at Totnes Rare Breeds Farm to see hedgehogs, pygmy goats and squirrels and Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies to spot otters underwater and walk through sub-tropical butterfly enclosures.
As well as organised activities there is also plenty of scope in Devon to simply take the kids to any of the hundreds of local beaches for the day and let them loose with sand castle building, paddling, shell collecting, etc.
