Things to Do/Places to Visit in West Yorkshire

Attractions abound in West Yorkshire for whatever age and taste....

Children will love the Eureka Museum in Halifax, a very hands on experience and Britain's first discovery centre for children.  All the family will enjoy the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford with its giant Imax screen.  It is the most visited museum outside of London and has won Visitor attraction of the Year awards.

Tropical World set in Roundhay Park, Leeds features a butterfly house and an Amazon rainforest with tropical birds and reptiles.  The park itself is 700 acres of expansive gardens.

Bradford Museum Sporting fans can go behind the scenes at Elland Road, home of Leeds United, and see the changing rooms and sit in the dugout.  Cricket fans can head to Headingley for cricket or Rugby Union and Rugby League with the Rhino's and Tykes.

For a totally different sporting experience you could go to Halifax to England's first Mountain Boarding Centre or try Orienteering in Calderdale round 5 permanent courses, a 'treasure hunt with attitude'.

At Bingley you will find the famous grade one listed 5 rise locks on the Leeds Liverpool canal where you can pick up a boat trip.  You can also do this in Shipley, when you visit Salts Mill - a world heritage site.
The Royal Armouries Museum houses 8000 exhibits from 3000 years of history and has breathtaking displays and live action events.

National Coal Mining Museum The town of Holmfirth is an attraction in itself and you will see where the characters of 'Last of the Summer Wine' lived out their adventures.  The surrounding scenery is stunning.

The National Coal Mining Museum at Wakefield offers you the fascinating experience of going down a real coal mine.

Other film and TV locations
include 'Where the Heart is' - Slaithwaite and Marsden, 'Brassed Off' with Ewan McGregor which was filmed partly in Halifax and partly in the village of Esholt, which for many years was also home to ITV's Emmerdale. 'Band of Gold' was filmed in Bradford.
