On arrival vehicles are parked at Hornton Grounds farm and a ten-minute walk brings you to the craftsman built wooden octagonal cabin situated by the private lake in a secluded valley at the northern tip of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
La Retraite is an off-grid pod set in a private valley where springs rise and flow into the lake and onwards to the river Cherwell and the Thames surrounded by young woodland and farmland both livestock and arable. You may wake up to the baaing of lambs or the lowing of cattle in nearby fields. Deer and badgers inhabit the valley along with numerous birds and rabbits. Pheasants and Partridge from the nearby shoot will wander past too.
La Retraite has solar panels, potable water, a log burner and infrared heating run from solar power and a shower and compost loo.
It sleeps two and can just take a baby in a travel cot.
Dogs are welcome but must always be kept under control.

The pod has a superb sofa bed and you wake up to views across the small lake. On sunny days breakfast on the deck by the lake or BBQ by the picnic logs.

There is a farm shop at Hornton Grounds where stunning pasture fed beef and Lamb and rarebreed pork can be bought.
Other supplies will need to be bought before arrival.
There is a BBQ and a two-ring gas hob to cook on.
Ten minutes’ walk to the village of Hornton brings you to the Dun Cow pub which offers excellent beer and good food but do check opening times. On the boundary of the farm is a very popular Indian restaurant the Indian Queen at Wroxton Heath some ten minutes’ walk from the pod.
The outstanding Bell at Shennington is a forty-minute walk away for outstanding lunches and the Rose and Crown at Ratley is a good walk for a lovely meal.

Sensible walking boots or wellies are essential. The countryside is all small valleys and rolling hills. Hornton Grounds is on the Darcy Dalton Way which is a wonderful walking route along with the Macmillan Way. There are delightful Cotswold villages to explore Ratley, Horley, Balscote and Radway just over the county border in Warwickshire the site of the infamous Battle of Edgehill.

La Retraite is an off-grid pod set in a private valley where springs rise and flow into the lake and onwards to the river Cherwell and the Thames. Solar powered lighting and infrared heating. Delightful log burner keeps you warm even on snowy days when the sun does not shine. Ensuite shower, compost toilet, small kitchenette with two ring gas hob. Small dining area, wonderfully comfortable sofabed looking out over the lake. Duvets and towels all supplied along with a welcome pack for breakfast. Decked area with table and chairs and a BBQ. Firewood supplied - charcoal available.  Sensible footware essential ! 10 minute walk to Dun Cow pub in Hornton

Finding Us

From the M40 south, at Junction 11 follow signs to Banbury A422, continue on A422 signed Wroxton, Stratford upon Avon. Drive through Wroxton, stay on the A422 and ignore signs to Hornton, just after the New Inn pub there is a wide turning on the right, signed Peter Bennie Hornton Grounds, turn in here and immediately take the turning to the right signed Hornton Grounds Farm, follow the long drive up to the trees and turn right after the tennis court and this will bring you to the front door.

From M40 north, take junction 12. Follow the signs to Gaydon, turn left into the village and follow the brown tourist signs to Upton House. Follow the A422, leave Warwickshire and enter Oxfordshire! As you pass the blue county sign the farm is on your left, take the first left turn and immediately turn right signed Hornton Grounds Farm follow the long drive up to the trees and turn right after the tennis court and this will bring you to the front door.

Ignore your sat nav. if it tries to send you into the village of Hornton! The Only access to Hornton Grounds is from A422.

Location

We are in the Cotswolds in North Oxfordshire just 6 miles from Banbury and its excellent shopping centre and just 12 miles from Stratford upon Avon and Shakespeare’s birthplace and the theatre.

Exploring the villages of the Cotswolds is wonderful with shopping for antiques in Moreton in the Marsh or Stow on the Wold.

The National Trust property, Upton House, with its wonderful art collection and gardens is two minutes away and only a little further is Edgehill, site of the first battle in the Civil War. Walking through the woods in spring when Edgehill is a carpet of bluebells is breathtaking. The National Herb centre is close by and the gardens of Kiftsgate, Hidcote, Sezincote and Coughton Court are only a short drive. Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle, Broughton Castle are all under an hour away. A brief journey will bring you to Charlecote Park and Compton Verney.

Bloxham School and Tudor Hall School are close by.
