Ciderhouse Cottage, a former cartshed built in the early 1800s is situated on a working farm formerly part of the famous 'Rolls' Estate. Down duvets and welsh wool blankets together with original oak beams and underfloor heating will make your stay with us extra special.

The cottage has an open plan kitchen/dining/living area ideal for gathering with family and friends. It has the benefit of a gas wood burner to take away that winter chill after a day of adventure.

It has three bedrooms - a master bedroom with a spacious wet room ensuite and two twin rooms with additional bathroom.

We are 5 miles from Monmouth in the beautiful Welsh borders and situated in the most gorgeous countryside between the Wye Valley & Black Mountains.  Monmouth is a Welsh border market town situated at the confluence of the Rivers Wye, Monnow and Trothy. It has a medieval 13th century bridge over the River Monnow, unique in Britain as it is the only preserved bridge of its design remaining-

Penylan, meaning top-of-the-hill, is situated in the Parish of Llangattock-vibon-Avel and was originally part of the historic Hendre Estate, home of the famous Rolls family. Co-founder of Rolls-Royce, Charles Stewart Rolls was also celebrated as a racing driver, record breaker and aviator. In 1910 he became the first person to fly the Channel both ways. He is buried in the churchyard at Llangattock next to the Manor house where he spent his childhood.  His statue can be found in Agincourt Square in Monmouth together with the statue of Henry V who was born in Monmouth Castle.

  • Cycle the ‘Peregrine Trail’ alongside the Wye to Symonds Yat.  We offer secure bike storage, so you can relax and focus on planning your rides through the Forest of Dean’s extensive tracks or following the Peregrine Trail along the Wye to Symonds Yat.
  • Walkers paradise. The famous ‘Offa’s Dyke’ path and ‘Three Castles Walk’ are both two miles away. Head south to the river walks in the Wye Valley or north-east to the contrasting rugged Black Mountains & Brecon Beacons
  • Why not take a picnic from the door and enjoy our 5 mile tailored walk of ‘The Rolls Circuit’.  It starts from your front door and takes in the history and beauty of the area surrounding Penylan – you could well be lucky and see the occasional deer from the ancient woodland in the Hendre.

 Directions from Monmouth to Penylan Farm, Hendre, NP25 5NL (5 miles from Monmouth)


To reach Penylan Farm take B4233 out of Monmouth towards Rockfield/Abergavenny. This will take you over roundabout near old gatehouse/bridge and straight over three mini roundabouts.
Keep left in the village of Rockfield (approx. 2 miles from Monmouth) staying on B4233 towards Abergavenny.
After passing the Steppes Farm Cottages/Stonemill Restaurant take the next right turn (approximately half a mile further and just past a white bungalow on the right).
Follow road for approximately 1 ½ miles. After passing Llangattock Montessori School on the left take next left turn (opposite cottage on right).
Penylan is situated approximately ½ mile down road on right hand side.
