Just five minutes from central Ryde, Carters Stables is nestled in the idyllic surrounding countryside, and offers both conventional and unconventional accommodation for guests.

Originally built in 1905, Carters Stables was attached to the long-gone Carters (or 'Upton') Manor, as stabling for their horses, accommodation for their stablehands and storage for their coaches. At some point, it was abandoned and fell into disrepair - until 50 years ago when our family bought it and started to rebuild it, turning it into a 3-acre family smallholding.

Now, Carters Stables is also home to Level Land Farm - our working community farm open to people of all ages. From advice on how to start keeping animals, learning to hand-milk a goat, spinning and dyeing your own yarn from fleece or even if you just need a goat cuddle - all you have to do is contact us and there will be a space at Carters for you!

2023 marks Year 0 of our long-term revival plan for Carters Stables, which includes creating new spaces for skillsharing and creativity - including a fully-licensed milking parlour, retreat barn, monastic cell garden & bee glade.

Whether you plan to have a quiet holiday to yourself or want to get stuck into everything Carters offers - you are so very welcome and we hope you enjoy staying here as much as we love our little slice of island!

Nestled within a cosy corner of the 119-year old Victorian stableyard, the Lodge is our more conventional accommodation with full amenities including high-speed Wi-Fi, Smart TV, washer-dryer, private & discreet parking, & a private entrance through its personal, cosy cottage garden. 

Freshly-made sourdough, seasonal organic produce & much more are available on request.

The Barn Retreat [Coming Soon]

A pastoral hideaway at the heart of our working smallholding  - with our gorgeous Golden Guernsey goats as neighbours!

This converted barn is a simple, creative space with no TV or Wi-Fi - just peace, comfort and nourishment for mind, body & soul.

The Barn is fully catered, with guests sharing in the community menu which is delivered to the Barn. All food is hand-cooked from scratch, using LOAF (Local, Organic, Animal-Friendly and/or Fairtrade) ingredients; and more often than not, the ingredients are produced directly on the smallholding.

For the use and enjoyment of guests, there is art equipment, spinning wheels, musical instruments and shelves of inspiring books to peruse - all complimentary to your stay at the Barn.

We are big animal lovers (hence the farm...) and love it when guests bring along their pets. The lodge can accommodate 2 furry guests - £10 each per stay.
