Welcome to Surrey

Surrey is an area of outstanding natural beauty waiting to be discovered

The North Downs provides dramatic wooded hillsides with small, attractive towns and villages nestling in the valleys.  Here you can walk along the track claiming to be the Pilgrims' Way which connects Winchester to Canterbury, or clamber up famous heights like Leith Hill - just short of 1,000ft - or its neighbour Box Hill, coming down via the intriguingly named Zig Zag Hill.

The charming towns of Farnham, Guildford and Dorking are excellent for shopping and there are numerous pretty villages for the lover of teashops and antiques.

The National Trust's Polesden Lacey is a jewel in a beautiful setting, yet none of this is more than an hour from London.

Those inspired by the area over the years include Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Evelyn, Jane Austen, Edwin Lutyens, Gertrude Jekyll, John KeatSurreys, Alfred Tennyson, EM Forster, Charles Dickens and J M W Turner.

Although one of the most densely wooded areas in the country, the Surrey Hills is nevertheless an intriguingly diverse area characterised by hills and valleys, traditional grassland farming, its patchwork of chalk grassland and heathland, sunken lanes, grand villas in the Arts and Crafts Style, and associations with many of the country's great artists, writers and designers.

North Downs Way National Trail - offering tranquility, beauty, historical and literary interest. The North Downs Way includes many famous beauty spots such as the Hogs Back, Newlands Corner and Box Hill.

The Greenlands Way - This scenic route passes through a varied landscape of heathland, woodlands and traditional farmland.
