 The English Heritage site of Gainsthorpe Medieval Village which is a deserted medieval village, one of the best-preserved examples in England, clearly visible as a complex of grassy humps and bumps. According to legend demolished as a den of thieves, but the real reason for its abandonment remains uncertain.

With links to Tennyson and Darwin a worthwhile trip to the National Trust property of Gunby Hall and Gardens is possible with your dog – who is allowed in the grounds and on the tea terrace. Or venture out through the Gunby Estate to the nearby Monksthorpe Chapel, a unique secluded chapel which was built to look like a barn in order to avoid being discovered.
