Blarghour Farm is situated mid-way along Loch Awe and is central for exploring Argyll and beyond.

Some ideas for things to see and do …

  • Drive through scenic Glenorchy and the majestic mountains of Glen Coe
  • Take a day trip from Oban to Mull, Iona and Staffa (Fingal’s Cave)
  • guided tour of Oban Whiskey Distillery
  • Inveraray Castle and gardens or Inveraray Jail
  • The standing stones, chambered cairns and ancient rock art along Kilmartin Glen
  • Observe yachts navigating the locks along Crinan Canal
  • Crarae, Arduaine, Benmore or one of the many glorious Gardens in Argyll
  • A Boat trip to see wildlife and the Corryvreckan Whirlpool or Fingal’s Cave
  • The ‘Hollow Mountain’ Cruachan Power Station & café
  • Loch Awe has four ruined castles with Kilchurn, often featured on calendars, near Dalmally, probably the best known.
  • St Conan’s Kirk in Lochawe Village is also worth a visit.

Walking & Nature

With hills, lochs, islands, mountains, forests, gardens and ancient history there is an abundance of interesting walks around Argyll.

  • Kintail Birds of Prey: Falconry Experiences with Heidi the golden eagle, merlin, sparrow hawk, peregrine falcon, a barn owl and Digger the little owl.
  • Moine Mhor nature reserve is by Crinan Canal and you will find Taynish nature reserve just past Tayvallich.
  • The Eurasian Beaver, first introduced on a trial basis in 2008, was formally recognised as a native species in 2016, so the Beavers of Knapdale are staying.
  • Glen Etive is a remote area of ‘Wild Land’ accessed via a single-track road where red deer and golden eagles thrive in the solitude of the glen.

Boat Tours

  • Corryvreckan Whirlpool: Sealife Adventures from Seil Island or Craignish Cruises based in Ardfern
  • Fingals Corryvreckan WhirlpoolCave: Turus Mara and Staffa Tours on the island of Mull combine Fingals Cave and the Treshnish Isles, where puffins come onshore to nest (May – July) as do 6,000 guillemot, razorbill, kittiwake, fulmar, shag and skua.
  • Iona Abbey & Fingal’s Cave: Staffa Tours (possibility to see puffins on Staffa with a quick visit to Fingals Cave).
  • Seal colonies: short trips from Oban Harbour to seal colonies nearby.

Golf: Dalmally is our local 9 hole golf course and the aptly named ‘Orchy Splash’ on hole 3 is an interesting challenge for most golfers.

Pony Trekking: Argyll Adventure near Inveraray offers scenic treks along Loch Fyne with led pony rides for younger children and apprehensive riders. Tel: 01499 302611

For a bit of a challenge, the High Wire courses at the Nevis Range near Fort William are excellent with a variety of courses for different ages and abilities. You can also hire bikes and try the mountain biking courses.

For a good safe beach, Ganavan Sands just outside Oban and Crinan Ferry are probably hard to beat.
