An ancient Tudor Barn and completely separate Old Brooder provide two unusual large group accommodation venues on our environmentally-friendly and very peaceful Milden Hall Farm close to historic Lavenham.

In either of our completely separate large properties - the Tudor Barn or the Old Brooder - friends, families, naturalists, historians, walkers, cyclists, civilised hens can get together in beautiful, ancient and unspoiled surroundings, amidst our sensitively farmed landscape and listed farm buildings. You can walk our farm trails, picnic in wildflower meadows, run, cycle, hug trees, pond dip, read, play tennis or croquet, paint, sing, eat, dance and be merry – and if you’d like to, dip one foot into the 16th century in Tudor costume. The massive, ancient and unusual Tudor Barn is magnificent without being stiflingly posh whilst the Old Brooder provides stylish large group accommodation for those on more of a budget.

Come and enjoy the history, wildlife and atmosphere of Milden Hall Farm

Milden Hall has been the Hawkins family home and 500-acre working farm for over 200 years and is definitely not a holiday ‘complex’.  When 20+ guests gather here in the Tudor Barn or Old Brooder, it is usually to celebrate something special – a Golden Wedding, a 50th birthday, a civilised hen party.  There is something for pretty much everyone, in fine or wet weather, inside or outside on the farm, and space to roam, space to be alone or together. We're passionate historians and conservationists and encourage our guests to join in our green ethos.

We have Tudor costumes for a banquet, a dressing up box for children, a family activity pack full of ideas for enjoying the farm from scavenger hunts to tree-hugging, leaf sewing, pond dipping and other delights.  You can play tennis, rounders, football or simply take a picnic and enjoy the farm trails and castle earthworks – and meet the friendly pigs, sheep and hens.  Many groups barely leave the farm for their entire stay except to borrow our large fleet of 45 adult road bikes to explore the quiet country lanes and local historic so-called Wool Towns.

Beyond the farm you can take yourselves off locally for some action or culture.  Go Ape in Thetford Forest for a high wire experience; kayak or canoe down the River Stour from Sudbury 15 minutes away.   National Trust properties are well within an hour’s drive: Lavenham Guildhall and Melford Hall (10 minutes away), explore Ickworth House and parkland or the incredibly important Anglo-Saxon ship burial site at Sutton Hoo on the coast, or hire a boat at Flatford Mill.  Antique hunt in Long Melford.

Schools may wish to house part of their group in the Old Brooder and/or in the Tudor barn and all eat in the barn.  We also offer our own residential school programmes of environmental activities, art and crafts, history days (Tudor and World War II).

We're happy to quote for smaller groups (minimum two-night stays, exceptionally one-night),  extra guests invited for the day or evening or small wedding/celebratory event.

The ancient, atmospheric Tudor barn is for the adventurous!  It sleeps up to 25 in five bedrooms (3 x 2, 1 x 3, 1 x 16) and provides a great space for a large group gathering who wish to celebrate some special occasion peacefully in the countryside.  We're happy to quote for smaller groups, extra guests invited for the day or evening or small wedding event.

Cook in the large well-equipped kitchen, feast at large oak banquet tables, and borrow our period costumes, eat off wooden platters and dance by candle-light to madrigals.  We unpack your supermarket delivery, advise on where to eat or put you in touch with a local chef.  Outside there’s a BBQ, picnic tables, herb gardens, games - and wildlife!

Sleeping arrangements are complicated so please ask for details.  There are four private rooms for those who would like their own space and the enormous open plan barn area sleeps 16 in comfortable Suffolk-oak beds (four-posters, singles), with comfy seating for 25+ around the woodburner in winter, and space for yoga and dancing elsewhere.  There are lots of showers/WCs.  Parts of the barn are underfloor heated, elsewhere there is a woodburner.

The well-kitted out kitchen-dining area provides simple seating for 22 at rustic tables and we’re happy to unpack your supermarket delivery for you to cook yourself or you can pre-book wholesome delivered meals.

Outside in the garden, you can eat at picnic tables on a sunny terrace, BBQ on a summer evening, play croquet, badminton, table tennis or table football  – and enjoy the farm trails and wildlife beyond.  And you can borrow the 20+ adult road bikes to explore the quiet country lanes

Additional Directions Information

There are two long farm drives and plenty of parking and a electric car charging point for guests. It is very accessible from Harwich and Stanstead airport - and easy driving distance to Cambridge (1hr), Bury St Edmunds (30 mins), Norwich (75 mins) and the Suffolk coast (75 mins).

Sudbury is the nearest (very small) train station – a 15 minute taxi ride to Milden. For the ‘Lovejoy line’ to Sudbury you must change from the Colchester-Liverpool Street line at Marks Tey. Colchester is 30+ minutes away by taxi but trains run regularly to and from Liverpool Street.  Bury St Edmunds train station (25 mins away) is approached from the Midlands and the North.

Ask us for list of local taxis. Taxis need booking up well in advance and clarification that this is The Hall at Milden (not the town of Mildenhall).
