Aviation Heritage in Lincolnshire
Aviation heritage enthusiasts will truly be spoilt for choice in the East Midlands county of Lincolnshire, often referred to as “Bomber County”.
The highlight is undoubtedly the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at former RAF East Kirkby: exhibits include the Lancaster bomber "Just Jane”, a WWII Spitfire, plus exhibitions on the Dambuster raid and the sinking of the Tirpitz. "Just Jane" taxys normally twice a week during the summer months although this should be checked on their website before visiting.
Thorpe Camp is the former home to 617 Squadron, who are immortalised in an impressive memorial in the nearby village of Woodhall Spa. The world-renowned Red Arrows are based at RAF Scampton, whilst guided tours are available at The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre at RAF Coningsby. (Image credit ELDC)
Lincoln also now hosts the International Bomber Command Centre which is well worth a visit when exploring Lincolnshire's aviation history. More information can be obtained about the centre at www.internationalbcc.co.uk.
