Located half a mile beyond the market town of Alston, Cumbria lies Mark Close Farmhouse (sleeps 20) and Mark Close Milking Parlour (sleeps 2); set within the heart of The North Pennines AONB.

We have two different self-catering holiday cottages available; a nine bedroom traditional farmhouse which sleeps up to 20 and a cosy one bedroom cottage for two. The Farmhouse is a great holiday rental for groups of families and friends. The Milking Parlour offers an ideal rental for couples looking for a romantic retreat, it also has a private hot tub in the garden which is perfect for stargazing. Both our holiday cottages are dog friendly and can be booked together. We also have friendly alpacas who love being visited by our cottage guests.

A fantastic base to explore The North Pennines AONB & beyond!

We are ideally located to explore the North Pennines AONB and is within easy reach of The Lake District National Park, The Solway Coast AONB and Northumberland National Park.

As well as numerous national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty that are within easy reach; other exciting places of interest include Hadrian’s Wall, Kielder Forest Park, The Scottish Borders, the vibrant/historic cities of Newcastle and Carlisle as well as numerous market towns such as Hexham, Barnard Castle and Penrith.

Mark Close Farmhouse is a traditional 18th century farmhouse. Consisting of 9 bedrooms the property provides group accommodation for up to 20 people and you’re more than welcome to bring up to four dogs (subject to an additional fee of £20 per dog) .

The bedrooms are arranged as 2 family rooms (each consisting of 1 single & 1 double bed), 3 double rooms and 4 twin rooms. There are 5 shower/bathrooms (one of which is en-suite).

The farmhouse has a large 0.2 acre enclosed garden with a number of picnic benches as well as a patio area with a BBQ and further seating.

The milking parlour was orignally a working  dairy milking parlour and converted into a cottage in the early 2000’s & renovated in 2021. It is now a cosy cottage that consists of 1 bedroom. With underfloor heating throughout as well as a wood burning stove in the living room. The cottage can accomodate 2 people and you’re more than welcome to bring up to 2 dogs (subject to an additional fee of £20 per dog).

The property has an enclosed private garden with a patio and lawned area. The milking parlour also comes with a private hot tub for guests to enjoy. The garden backs onto open farmland that is regularly grazed by a flock of sheep. The garden is a popular haunt for various garden birds, pheasants and woodpeckers.

From the A1 at Scotch Corner (Junction 53) follow signs for A66 (Brough, Penrith) Then follow signs for B6277 (Middleton-in-Teesdale, Alston) Upon reaching Alston, follow the signs for Brampton (A689) After leaving Alston, Mark Close Farmhouse will be on the left.

 

From Newcastle follow signs for A69 (Hexham, Haydon Bridge) When nearing Haydon Bridge follow signs for A686 (Alston) Upon reaching Alston, follow the signs for Brampton (A689) After leaving Alston, Mark Close Farmhouse will be on the left.
