A striking landmark in the Upper Calder Valley, it was erected in 1815 to celebrate the peace treaty after the Battle of Waterloo at the end of the Napoleonic Wars following the defeat of the French army by the Duke of Wellington. Rebuilt in 1845, it celebrated its bicentenary in 2015. There are several different routes up to Stoodley Pike from Hebden Bridge, Todmorden or Cragg Vale. It’s well worth the climb as there are splendid panoramic views from the top and you can climb up to the viewing balcony on the monument itself.
