Little Comfort Farm is a nature lover's paradise, owned by ecologists Jeremy and Jodie who are passionate about wildlife. Enjoy complimentary farm experience and nature sessions, meet resident barn owls, kingfishers, otters, at least 11 bat species, butterflies and more! Our 4 cottages sleep up to 23 in three smaller cottages and one 5 bedroom Mill House. Two are wheelchair accessible (M2 rated) and two are dog friendly. On site farm shop, therapy room, games room and course fishing lake.

Little Comfort Farm is owned by two professional ecologists who are passionate about rewilding and offering guests an opportunity to enjoy amazing wildlife experiences. Four beautifully restored holiday cottages are nestled within a truly enchanting valley full of wildlife. 70 acres of traditionally managed, flower rich meadows bordered by dense berry and flower filled hedgerows and ancient woodland. Next to our traditional orchard, the river feeds a secluded and peaceful course fishing lake (complimetary fishing for resident guests). Meet our chickens and native rare breed cattle and geese including our big boy Bruce the bull and our friendly flock of sheep including tame Pumba! We offer complimentary farm experiences twice a week and a variety of nature discovery sessions and at least one a week is complimentary. These include ecologist led dusk bat walks, moth trapping, dawn chrous experience, reptile discovery, butterfly walk and more!

At Little Comfort Farm we seek to prove that it’s ok to love mud and creature comforts in equal measure. It’s not often you see the words organic, luxury and farmstay together. Is it possible? We think so – come and find out!

The Granary is a spacious, open plan single storey cottage with a beautiful vaulted, south facing kitchen with ‘cathedral window’. This bathes the cottage in sunlight and provides superb views while cooking or sat at the breakfast bar. The lounge and dining areas have an impressive vaulted ceiling and are warmed by a state of the art woodburner. The Granary is a long standing favourite and is now wheelchair accessible too (M2 Rated by Visit England). There is a very spacious wet room with bath and separate shower, tastefully designed to incorporate wheelchair access. The master king bedroom features french doors onto a private breakfast terrace and the second twin bedroom features award winning orthopaedic beds. In addition to the ensuite breakfast terrace, Granary has a separate, fully enclosed and private patio garden area with BBQ that benefits from evening sun.

Woodlark is a super cosy bolthole cottage with views over the treetops and valley. On the ground floor, you will discover two incredibly inviting bedrooms, a spacious bathroom and separate WC and upstairs a beautifully light and airy, open plan kitchen, dining area and lounge. Children adore sitting on the raised box seat, surrounded by cushions, a great place to curl up and read a book or enjoy the views. You can even watch bats emerging from Caen Byre's roof in the evening which is quite a sight! Fully renovated and restored in winter 2018. The bright, south facing main bedroom has a king size, award winning organic bed and the second bedroom features a luxury double bunk bed. A traditional, two up, two down layout with a fully enclosed south facing courtyard garden overlooking the landscaped gardens. In winter, the lounge with comfy sofas and wood burning stove is particularly inviting. Fully equipped, high quality slate and wood kitchen with double oven, dishwasher, induction hob and dining table. The king bedroom has a luxury organic king bed and lovely views of the river and beyond and the second bedroom has three single beds, two of which are award winning back care beds by Demko. The spacious open plan living areas are at the heart of this lovely former Mill House, and benefit from fantastic views. This cottage was made for social gatherings with a well equipped, high quality kitchen and breakfast bar, Smeg range cooker, huge oak dining table and big comfy sofas warmed by a state of the art woodburning stove. The upper ground outside area offers a fantastic group social space with a big wooden dining table and seating. A rustic covered deck area creates an additional versatile space for eating and drinking, yoga or even an outdoor massage! 

Three bedrooms are ensuite and the further two bedrooms each have their own adjacent bathrooms. The ensuite downstairs bedrooms share a south facing terrace for lazy breakfasts. 

The Upper Ground Floor has been awarded M2 Accessibility Status by Visit England.

Directions to us via Braunton

  1. From junction 27 of the M5 take the North Devon Link Road (A361) to Barnstaple.
  2. At round about just before Barnstaple take signs for the A361 to Ilfracombe.
  3. Pass through Braunton still on the A361 (towards Ilfracombe).
  4. Pass through the village of Knowle still on the A361.
  5. 2/3 mile after Knowle turn right towards Halsinger at Heddon Mills Cross, by bus stop. Please take great care at this junction – check your mirrors for overtaking vehicles before turning.
  6. Proceed 1.8 miles turning left at the second crossroads.
  7. Then left again after a very short distance.
  8. Continue for 1 mile down a winding lane, over a small bridge and take the second entrance (signposted Main Car Park) for Woodlark, Caen Byre, farm shop, therapy room and fishing. For the Mill House or the Granary please take Entrance 2.

Alternative route via Exmoor

Avoid this route if you are a nervous driver and do not like reversing as the final road down to us is quite long and narrow with very few passing points. You’d be unlucky to meet a car but it obviously can happen and you may have to reverse some distance. It is, nonetheless, a beautiful road and we enjoy using it without issue).

If you like the idea of going via Exmoor, but not the final narrow road, at step 7, don’t turn left before the school, just carry on and it will take you down to the A361 where you turn left and then left again at the Heddon Mills junction (and pick up the directions above from step 5).

  1. From junction 27 of the M5 proceed to South Molton along the A361.
  2. Here turn right at the roundabout (Aller Cross) towards Brayford and Blackmoor Gate (A399).
  3. Continue through Brayford and past Blackmoor Gate.
  4. Three miles after Blackmoor gate turn left onto the A3123 towards Mullacott Cross and Woolacombe.
  5. Turn left at T junction just before Berry Down Cross and take care to avoid turning to East Down where the main road turns a very sharp corner.
  6. Go straight over at Lynton Cross (by On-a-Hill garage) then turn left to West Down village.
  7. In the centre of West Down turn right towards the school (signed Barnstaple) and left just before the school to leave the village on a country lane.
  8. Take the second turning on the left (signed Little Comfort Corner) and proceed down the hill along a narrow lane to Little Comfort which is on the left at the bottom of the hill before the bridge. Take the first gateway (signposted Entrance 2) for the Mill House and Granary and the second gateway (signposted Main Entrance) for Caen Byre, Woodlark and all other facilities.
