Our History:
Built in 1905, Carters Stables once served the grand Carters (or “Upton”) Manor—housing horses, stablehands and the estate’s coaches. The stableyard was eventually abandoned and derelict, until 40+ years ago, when our family bought and revived it, transforming it into a family home and smallholding.
Our cosy little lodge sits where the coaches were originally kept, giving it a special place in the estate’s original courtyard.
(FAQ: Are there any ghosts?
Answer: To our knowledge….no!)
2023 marked the beginning of our long-term revival of our family home. Over the coming years, we’re creating new spaces for community, comfort and creativity - including a milking parlour and cheese room, growing willow for weaving, an outdoor kitchen and communal family larder.

Our usual setup is:
• 2 guests = queen bed
• 3 guests = queen bed + 1 single
If you’d like a different arrangement, please let us know before check-in. With small children and farm life to juggle, we can’t always promise last-minute bed changes. Advance notice really helps us keep on top of things!

The lodge has its own private, designated parking space, suitable for one car.
Bikes can also be securely stored in the private garden, with a rain cover provided on request.
Our 3.5 acre smallholding is home to a range of farm animals, veg garden and sprawling fields. There is no free access to the farm for safety reasons, but we love to show our guests around, so don't be shy - ask us for a farm tour!
