Above Ullswater. Beneath the fells. Held by history.

Gowbarrow Old Hall isn’t just a place to stay – it’s somewhere to slow down, spread out and properly switch off. Tucked into the quiet folds above Ullswater, this 18th-century farmhouse has been gently restored as a Lakeland hideaway for families, friends and well-behaved dogs.

Read more about Gobarrow Old Hall

The house sleeps nine across four carefully considered bedrooms – from spacious king-size rooms to bunk beds and a triple that adapts to suit how you travel.

Whether you’re here with three generations, a few close friends or a full family cast, there’s space to be together and space to be still.

You’ll find a country kitchen with French windows opening out to the garden, a breakfast bar for slow mornings, and everything you need to cook properly (or not cook at all). Gather round the dining room’s wood-burning stove for long meals and local wine, or curl up in the sitting room with a book, a blanket, and views across the fells.

Additional Directions Information

We’re around 20 minutes from the M6 (Junction 40), which makes arriving simple whether you’re coming from the north or south. Leave the motorway at Penrith and follow the A66 towards Keswick before turning off for Ullswater. From there, the landscape begins to open out, with rolling fields, stone walls and glimpses of the lake as you climb towards the fells. The final approach is along a quiet country lane that winds through farmland to our gate. We’ll send detailed directions with your booking so you can relax and enjoy the scenery without worrying about wrong turns. There’s off-road parking for up to three cars, and an EV charging point in the adjacent farmyard if you’re driving electric — just let us know if you’d like to use it.
