Barnard Castle is a historic market town 21 miles south west of Durham City in Teesdale, the town grow up around the Norman Castle of the same name and is known locally as 'Barney'. The cobbled sections known as the Market Places is where weekly markets are held every Wednesday. This is where the Market Cross is located; the octagonal building is the Butter Market - farmers wives used to sell their dairy produce here on the ground floor.
The main street is line with independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Barney is best known for its antique shops.
The Bowes Museum is just a short walk from the town centre, this Museum built in a French chateau style houses a large collections of fine arts including paintings by Canaletto, ceramics, textiles and the famous Sliver Swan musical automaton which preforms daily to delight audiences.
A short drive from Barnard Castle is Raby Castle, Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland, High Force Waterfall and Bowlees Visitor Centre.
