Paycocke's House and Garden

Essex Historic Britain, Great Outdoors

Paycocke’s House has lots of stories to tell, from riches to rags and back again. Built in 1509 by Thomas Paycocke, the House has a bold front range and was described by Pevsner as ‘one of the most attractive half-timbered houses in England’. It was saved from neglect by a descendant of Paycocke, who in 1904 began a twenty year restoration project, including the creation of a delightful Arts and Crafts garden.
